About The Charity

Beechwood is a Charity based in Stockport, established in 1990 to support people from across the Northwest affected by cancer or other life-limiting illnesses.

Our team of professionals are available to help and support with the shock of diagnosis and the emotional effects of treatment, underpinned by a wide range of practical support – not only for the person directly affected but family and friends too.

The Charity’s services are free of charge at point of need, and we offer a package of support tailored to suit the individual, including one-to-one counselling, clinical hypnotherapy, mindfulness for health, complementary therapies, support groups, workshops to name but a few.

In addition, we:

  • We help children come to terms with the illness or loss of a parent or family member
  • We help carers cope with the difficulties and uncertainty of the illness of a loved one
  • We provide one-to-one support, facilitated groups and peer support groups to help the bereaved

Purpose of Job

The Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator will ensure all volunteers giving time to Beechwood are supported and valued in whatever role they are performing. Additionally, the role will require active engagement within the local communities, in terms of promoting volunteering opportunities, and to support both the Charity’s fundraising efforts and those of local supporters too.

The role reports into the Senior Fundraising & Marketing Manager, though collaboration with other managers will be required to ensure successful volunteer placements.

You will be instrumental in establishing and managing a range of external and internal relationships, with a personable, approachable style being essential to this role’s success.
You should be an excellent communicator, with good organisational skills to ensure accurate and up to date records are maintained.

This role is key in raising awareness of the Charity’s purpose and the importance of community and volunteer support to deliver Beechwood’s services. You will be skilled in managing different personalities and relationships, whilst ensuring all stakeholders feel valued and have a positive experience of Beechwood.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Volunteer Function

  • Recruit, train, induct and supervise new volunteers
  • Liaise with the Charity’s department leads to understand what is required for volunteer roles, and draft relevant volunteer role profiles for sign off
  • Attend to all volunteer administration
  • Where a role requires a DBS check, liaise with the departmental manager or PA to ensure this is taken up
  • Collect and collate volunteer data and maintain up-to-date records
  • Maximise the Charity’s fundraising and volunteer CRM to track support and journeys
  • Ensure all volunteers are equipped to undertake the role they will be assigned to
  • Identify, ensure, and enable volunteers to access online and face to face training
  • Ensure the contribution of volunteers and the impact of their support is recognised through reward and recognition activities and in an engaging and creative manner
  • Organise and attend profile-raising events to attract new volunteers
  • Implement and deliver volunteer recruitment campaigns
  • Contribute to the compilation and introduction of a new volunteering pack

Community Engagement & Fundraising Support

  • Represent the Charity at events and fundraisers, including 3rd party fundraisers
  • Identify and agree locations for Beechwood collection tins and ensure these are recorded and managed
  • Promotion of the Beechwood Lottery and undertake associated admin
  • Promotion of Beechwood’s Butterfly Club, thanking supporters and undertaking associated admin
  • Lead on the preparation and coordination of the annual Remembrance Service
  • Engage with and participate in relevant local and national network meetings
  • Engage with a range of stakeholders to attract community and corporate support
  • Actively engage in community initiatives and events
  • Organise and deliver in-house community events
  • Supply and coordinate event support volunteers for in-house fundraisers, and as requested by 3rd party fundraisers
  • Ensure Beechwood’s volunteer support and engagement exemplifies the Charity’s ethos and values

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Identify and facilitate mechanisms to engage with volunteers and receive feedback
  • Monitor and evaluate activities to identify successes, learnings and developments
  • Monitor the suitability and performance of volunteers in their volunteer roles
  • Maintain relevant and rich volunteer data on the Charity’s database and undertake any other engagement and administration duties as appropriate
  • Work with all managers to identify potential volunteering opportunities
  • Ensure volunteering policies and procedures are in place, reviewed and adhered to

Person Specification

Essential Desirable
Excellent IT and administrative skills
Experience of managing or coordinating projects and volunteers (paid or unpaid)
Experience of working in a charity
Able to recruit and onboard new volunteers confidently
Ability to support, monitor and assess volunteer cohorts
Able to produce volunteer data to inform improvements and developments
Ensure relevant volunteer specific policies are procedures are adhered to
Skills and Aptitude
Excellent interpersonal, communication and engagement skills
Able to convey messages clearly
A warm, friendly personality, willing to give time to nurture volunteers
The ability to engage with a diverse range of people
Ability to demonstrate empathy with volunteers and be considerate of their needs

Willingness to work outside of regular office hours occasionally and to attend / facilitate volunteer and fundraising events
A full, clean UK driving licence and use of a car
A team player, who supports the ethos of the Charity
Basic level of English
Competent in Microsoft Office Applications
Degree or related qualification/experience in recruitment, HR, fundraising or volunteer support
